Historic Street-cars

Whoever is looking for an unusual idea to celebrate a birthday, organize a press conference, transport a group of guests or perhaps celebrate their wedding in a truly original way, can rent a historic street-car.

The historic street-cars are wagon vehicles which date back to the 1920s and 1930s, and represent part of the history and tradition of Milan. Due to their beauty and timeless charm, they are considered real “jewels” of ATM’s fleet.

These vehicles which were partially renovated in their interiors, are offered to private subjects and companies for personalized tours. The street-cars can be made even more original, by setting up a catering service onboard, that may consist of a simple aperitif or a buffet dinner.

In addition, the environments are versatile to welcome the different types of events and entertaining (live music, mimes, conjurers, entertainers, etc).

History of the street-car type 1928

1927: the first prototype was conceived, street-car 1501 followed in 1928 by a second prototype registered with number 1502. The order of the 2 prototypes was entrusted to the Milanese firm Carminati e Toselli who built them within a very short period of time.

1928/1930: 500 vehicles were built (from 1503 to 2002), with riveted metal frames.

1931: a rear half door was added to facilitate passengers’ drop off. The station of the ticket seller was moved nearby the front door, between the second and third window and the ticket was paid when getting on.

1943: the bombings of August destroyed the majority of vehicles; when the second world war ended, almost all “1928” models were re-built, thanks to their sturdy steel body, which survived the flames.

1970: the street-car is no longer green but is painted in bright orange; the pantograph substitutes the “perteghetta” which is the trolley with wheels.

2007: ATM returns the “carrelli” to the city of Milan, with the original livery in yellow colour, free of advertising.
